Hip-Hop DBQ Project (100pts)
Throughout this class, we have been analyzing primary sources in order to understand a subject more deeply and even debunk myths that we might have had concerning a subject. If there is one art form that is chronically misunderstood, it is Hip-Hop. For this extra credit project you will evaluate one hip-hop artist and determine whether he or she is a positive or negative influence on American society.
Task
You will create a Hip-hop Artist Profile. You will choose one hip-hop artist. This could be a main-stream hip-hop artist or an underground artist.
You will start your notebook with a biography of the artist: where are they from and how they entered the hip-hop industry.
You will then select 15 songs from the artist's anthology (collection of works). The songs you choose are up to you. You need to have a printed off copy of the lyrics. You will need to write a one-paragraph (5-7 sentences) analysis for each of the songs.
Each paragraph should answer the following questions:
1) What is the significance or meaning of the title?
2) What is the main idea of the song? How do you know?
3) What does the song say about our world?
4) Based on the text, what would you assume our world is like if you weren't from America?
5) Does the song make America seem like a great civilization or a barbaric one? Why or Why not?
After you analyze each document, write a 2-3 page DBQ answering this Essential Question:
Is this artist ultimately making a positive or negative impact on American society? Why or why not.
You must use 8 documents in your essay to support your stance.
NOTE: You must pick either positive or negative, you cannot be both or a little of one.
